Rising to the Top: IUGB Students attend Business Case Competition For Professional Risk Managers’ International Association (PRMIA)

Mr. Ibrahim Berte (current Treasury and President of the Mathematical Risk Management Student Association at Georgia State University) and Mr. Moussa Sanogo, (Vice President and board member of the Risk Management Student Association) and Mr. Joshua Ababio recently participated in and placed 2nd in the 2017 PRMIA Business Case Competition on February 25, 2017th at Mercy College – Herald Square Campus, 66 W 35th St, New York, NY.  More than 30 teams entered the competition and only 16 advanced to the New York regionals.

The PRMC (The Professional Risk Managers’ Competition, a competition of the PRMIA Institute, (Professional Risk Managers’ International Association) encourages undergraduate and graduate students from multiple disciplines to use critical and creative thinking skills to solve realistic business problems with a risk management focus. Ultimately, the PRMC aims to develop and strengthen professional and social relationships across students, faculty, and risk professionals.  Graduate/undergraduate students in Canada, the U.S. and the EU may compete.  Regional Challenges are held in PRMIA London, Russia, Edmonton, Chicago, New York, Vancouver, Montreal, Netherlands or Toronto chapters, and these winners will present their cases at a final International Challenge.

Messrs. Sanogo, Berte and Ababio’s combined mathematical expertise and their case (Metro do Porto-an interest rate swap) helped them win 2nd place, a first for GSU’s Robinson School of Business teams. This competition marks the third time GSU’s Robinson School of Business teams had been named New York regional finalists.  Judges for the event were financial service professionals from the Banking and Risk Management industry with strong experience in quantitative analysis, and hold C level industry positions with firms such as Credit Suisse, American International Group, and Fitch Ratings.

The Metro do Porto team hopes to participate in and win PRMIA’s 2018 challenge.  Professional Risk Managers’ International Association earned a 2016 ASAE Power of A Silver Award for its Risk Management Challenge.  The internationally recognized student competition awards a prize of $10,000 which is pooled from application fees and is subject to U.S.taxes.  For more information on PRMIA and its case competition process, visit their website here:
